呼斯勒就要到旗里去上学了，然而他却不愿意，因为一旦去了城里，他将不得不和自己心爱的白马查干分开。白马查干是阿爸送给呼斯勒的，呼斯勒非常喜欢它。除了呼斯勒，查干不许任何人骑上自己的背脊，连阿爸也骑不了。大人们都不明白呼斯勒为什么不愿意去旗里上学。原来，一年前的一天，呼斯勒遇到了三个寻马人，他们为寻找看护自家祖先大英雄博尔忽敖包的转世神马来到了呼斯勒家的草场。呼斯勒的白马查干被他们认定为转世神马。他们和呼斯勒约定，一年后来接查干。呼斯勒答应他们，和查干形影不离。一年来，尽管别人甚至不相信这三个人的存在，呼斯勒却一直在等待着。可是现在呼斯勒必须去旗里上学了，如此一来只得和查干分开。更糟糕的是呼斯勒的阿爸为了改善家里的生活条件，让呼斯勒更好地学习和生活，决定举家搬进城里，而且准备将所有的牲口都买掉。尤其是白马查干，已经有买主过来询问了。于是呼斯勒展开了一场一个人的营救性行动。在这个过程中，他结识了新朋友，也感化了固执的大人们。经历不少风波，呼斯勒终于等到了那三个人。公德圆满，然而他却要和自己心爱的查干分离了。他还能见到自己心爱的小白马吗？
